SR1 short-course specialist Jason Weller was an astonishing seventh
overall in the new Yamaha YXZ1000R with Rekluse clutch, Tube
Works transmission kit with 70-percent-lower first gear and
10-percent-lower second to fifth, a Weller dual-rate spring kit, Factory
UTV UHMW under-armor and new Maxxis Liberty soft-compound
Winner Blake Van de Loo built his own sway bar decoupler link for
his LSR torsion bar and trailing arms. This lets him have maximum
articulation in boulders, then hydraulically activate the torsion bar for
high-speed desert turns. He also uses a Polaris unlocking rear diff
found on the XP 900 Trail and RCV Ultimate plunger CV axles with
polyurethane cups instead of boots ($925 each).
Every inlet and drain hose has to be fitted with a filter, or dust
becomes grit to take out vital components. Forced-air fans for CVT
ducts direct cooling air to the CVT belt and clutch. Check out the
sway bar extension to allow more articulation.
S&B Particle Separators are used by military helicopters to operate in
extreme dust, and they now make air-filtration systems for Polaris XP
1000s, Turbos and 900s, Mavericks and YXZ1000Rs. Dust enters 19
vortex generators (up front), where centrifugal force throws dust against
the tube and out of the rear slot, while a scavenger fan blows clean air
into the OEM filter intake. The system is $399.99 at www.sbfilters.com.
Six-time KOH champion Mitch Guthrie shows how to be prepared
while keeping the overall weight down. He was dicing for his seventh
win with Van de Loo when he broke a lower front heim joint in
Jackhammer and lost an hour replacing it with Junior. RCV axles are
protected by electrical tape too.
Mike Stumph went to AK07 for this custom race cage that protects
the front shocks in case of a roll-over. His YXZ sported an MPI Turbo
and a Barnett clutch; he had previously burnt up the OEM clutch and
accessory Rekluse. ❏
