HOW DOES IT HANDLE?
The Sportsman 850 handles well
for a machine that’s so big, heavy
and fast. Its power lets you steer with
the throttle and lift the front end if the
conditions are right, which makes the
big Sportsman feel lighter than it is.
The power steering also adds to the
machine’s light-handling feel. At high
speeds the power steering feels slightly
over-assisted. Normally, long-travel,
independent front and rear suspension
brings quite a bit of body roll, but we
were impressed with the Sportsman’s
stability on off-camber trails and its lack
of body roll in corners.
HOW IS IT ON HILLS?

into upward momentum. Getting
back down steep hills can be just as
challenging as going up, but this Polaris
is well-equipped for that too. Normal
4WD mode puts engine braking to the
850’s rear wheels only, which works
