Rally on the Rocks promoter Lance Chournos used a ramp to get through
Aftershock but would later break, and Casey Currie also used a shortened
ramp to get over the largest rocks. Of the UTV finishers, eight were Polaris
RZR XPs, and two Teryx 750/800s gave Kawasaki a 100 percent finish rate!
Kawasaki also held Teryx demo rides out of Hammertown.
Blake Van de Loo finished the KOH UTVs with a time that would’ve won last
year by two minutes, but it was only good for fifth in 2014.
Bill Barnett picks his way up Chocolate Thunder, and he’d later finish 20 minutes behind the #1919
Jagged X in his HCR Racing XP 900.
Girls are supposed to love chocolate, but Sportsman UTV pilot Amberly Sacalas and copilot Wendy Owens
took a tumble early in Chocolate Thunder and put the Big Ugly Racing Polaris on its lid. You can bet they’ll
be back on February 4, 2015!
Guthrie lost two positions in the pits, but passed Bulloch
and Enochs by Aftershock. However, sportsmen John
“Ducky” Duckworth and Cody Currie got to bypass nastier
sections of the second loop and were in the physical lead
into Chocolate Thunder.
Guthrie got by Sims by RM89 and would win by 8 minutes 14 seconds, and Mitch Junior only had to climb out
of the XP 1000 three times in five hours. Better yet, the
We saw four axles break at Aftershock and evidence of three more further down the ravine. Any
team accepting help from a spectator is disqualified,
but teams can help each other. It’s a long walk
when you run out of spares!
Guthries shaved almost three hours off of Mitch’s 2013
effort! Casey Currie finished 26 minutes back, and it was
his first-ever finish!
With 10 out of 36 UTVs finishing the KOH UTV
Challenge, we’re sure 2015 will subject the best UTV racers in America to an even tougher course, and we’ll have
to wait and see if loading ramps are outlawed before the
first week of February 2015. ❏
