I have a 2008 Kawasaki Brute Force
750, and every winter my rear brake
cable freezes. I have taken it apart and
used WD- 40, but it still freezes. I have
even replaced it, and the next cold
weather, it freezes again. Sarge, do you
have a cure for this freezing?
Boot, fact #1: Water freezes. Fact
#2: Water gets into everything that is
not protected. So, it is not surprising
that if you ride in water or your Zooter
is left out in the rain, that any water that
gets into the brake cable will freeze!
Now, what to do about it? WD- 40 is a
water displacer. Great for spraying an
ignition system or loosening a frozen
bolt, but where is the water inside your
brake cable going to be displaced to?
Remove your brake cable and take it
inside and dry it thoroughly. Then, lube
it with a dry lubricant like Dri-Slide.
Reinstall and you should be okay until
the next time water enters again. Also,
be aware that if the moisture that
was inside the cable rusted the inside
sheath, the rust will “eat” the plastic
inner liner as the cable is moved back
and forth during normal brake applications. This creates drag that can render
the cable useless because the resistance can overpower the brake cable
return spring, locking the brakes “on.”
Replacement is the only recourse here.
Find yourself a mud hole, Boot, and I
want to see you count off 50! Then we

I have a Honda
Rancher 400, and I have
looked all over for an
LED headlight conver-
sion. Several of my riding
buddies have gone the
HID route but with mixed
results. From what I have
seen, the HID conver-
sions just can’t stand
up to off-road with all
the bumps and water.
Several times I have
seen one or both lights
fail during a ride. So,
I thought that an LED
conversion would be bet-
ter. However, an extensive search has
turned up nothing. I am hoping that you
know all about these conversions.

Private Cornstalk, every H6M LED
conversion that I have seen is inferior to
a standard 35/35-watt halogen. One of
the problems is while the LED conversion looks bright, out on the trail the
light is far wider and uncontrolled, with
not as much light far down the trail. If
what you want is a wider light, then this
conversion may be what you are looking for. However, if you don’t want to
risk over-running your headlights, then
stick with the stock 35/35-watt bulbs,
or go with the so-called “super-bright”
versions or install an LED light bar. Now
those are really bright, and they extend
night-time vision far down the trail.

pre-run all your trails so you know
where those pesky trees are hiding!

HELP! MY TIRES KEEPS
At least twice a month my Can-Am
Renegade gets a slow leak on the rear
tires. I ride through tight woods, and I
end up with wood pieces stuck under
the tires’ beads. Do you recommend
breaking down the tires each time to
remove the wooded pieces, or is there
a better way?

Well, Kimberly Nicole-Marie, did it
ever occur to you that the problem may
actually be with your piloting of your
Zooter? Zooters rarely win against a
tree! Before I would de-bead the tire,
try just removing the Schrader valve
from the stem, deflating the tire, then
push the tire away from the rim and use
needle-nose pliers to remove the wood
slivers and then reinflate. Beadlock rims
will absolutely cure the problem, but so
would staying out of the woods! Laugh,
Boot! So, to recap, learn how to ride
a Zooter or get some beadlocks—and
drop some of those hoity-toity names,

WHICH WOULD YOU BUY?
I currently own a Polaris Ranger EV.
I am tired of the short run time and the
charger overheating, so I want your
opinion of a Bad Boy Buggy versus a
Stealth 4x4. My main uses would be
light farm duty and hunting. I was never
able to get more than about 8 to 10
miles out of the Ranger EV. I hope one
of my two choices will better suit my
New Canton, Illinois
What would I buy, Private Total?
Neither one! Both have a too-short
run-time, unless they have lithium batteries in them. However, since you are
apparently dead set on going electric,
I think you should start by driving a
new Stealth 4x4. Both brands have
improved greatly in the last year or
so. So, any reviews of two- or three-year-old Bad Boy Buggies or Stealth
4x4s will not reflect what is currently
produced. Then, follow up with a test
drive of a Bad Boy Buggy. I think you
will be much more impressed with the
Stealth 4x4. Also, look closely at the
hybrid model if you need to triple your
range. But remember, Boot, even with
the AGM batteries, they are not lithiums, and you should only expect about
12–15 miles in hard off-road conditions.
Double that on smooth, level, hard
ground. Stretch that out and you will be
getting your PT looking for a tow back
