Brandon Sims teamed up with Justin Krause in his Lone Star Racing/ITP factory Polaris to win
the desert challenge and a new RZR XP1K by four minutes over Christina Perkins, Abel Perez
and Danny Schul. The top 11 positions were RZRs.
of the carnage, getting well inside the
top 10 before getting sidelined with
broken wheel studs.
Beau Baron had a pretty good race
going in spite of his second-row starting
position. He worked up towards the
front and was cautiously picking off
the leaders until he dropped back to a
distant third after having to pit for fuel.
Ryan Holz also showed that he had
what it takes to win at an early age. He
finished second but picked up a time
penalty for speeding in the Hot Pit.
In the end, it was Jacob Shaw who
managed a 90-minute charge out
front for the win. Las Vegas’s Richie
Laatz had a very solid race, finishing
second after time penalties were
handed out. Beau Baron was third.
Desert racer Brandon Sims finished
fourth, and Ray Bulloch wrapped up
the top five. Mickey Thomas was sixth.
Mitch Guthrie Jr. finished seventh,
and Nicholas Templeton was the last
one to finish in the Money in eighth.
On a super positive and exciting note,
previously injured ATV champion Josh
Frederick nearly hit the pay schedule
with a ninth-place finish in his new
hand-control-equipped RZR XP 1000.
The Awards took place at Harrah’s
Beach Bar, and it was quite a party.
Champions were crowned and some
really cool handmade trophies were
handed out, along with the best purse
and prizes that anyone in UTV or ATV
racing has ever seen. A great time was
had by all, and we look forward to next
year. It was a great inaugural race.
More water trucks would be nice, but
the powers that be are already planning
that for next year. ❏
Ryan Holz finished second in the Pro Short-Course race but picked up a penalty for speeding
in the hot pit, and the penalty knocked him out of the top 10.
