work to balance the charge. Both do
the job, but Shorai is smaller, lighter
and stronger than a lead-acid unit.
Shorai LFX batteries come in a variety
of case shapes and sizes, capacity
options, and right/left polarity options
for modular fitment. Our Shorai unit had
a length of 6. 55 inches, 3. 39 inches
wide and 6. 10 inches tall, and weighed
just less than 5 pounds.
WHAT IT IS:
The Shorai lithium-iron Powersports
battery uses technology that allows for
a smaller, lighter unit with less sensitivity
to temperature and maximum cranking
power. In a world where lead-acid
batteries have dominated for decades,
a charged lithium-iron is shuttled back
and forth during charge and discharge,
where a lead-acid battery has electrons
that are passed externally through the
load while internal chemical reactions
When the LFX is slightly smaller than
the original battery in one dimension
or another, high-density, adhesive-backed foam sheets are included in the
package. These can be trimmed and
applied to the battery box to make a
solid fit, and with added thermal and
vibration insulation. Cable connections
can be made either at the tops or sides
of the terminals.
We fit a Shorai LFX36L3-BS12 into
our John Deere RSX850i Sport UTV,
which had a battery that constantly
lost its charge. The Shorai unit was
considerably smaller and did require
the installment of the foam sheets to
take up space in the battery box. Fitting
the terminals was simple and, other
than popping off some of the Deere’s
trim to gain access to the battery, the
installation job was painless.
Superb—bottom line. We abuse this
machine almost daily, and the Shorai
system offers impressive cranking
power with immediate gratification.
The only gripe came in the price
tag, which is higher than a lead-acid
unit. Still, the knowledge that the
Shorai lithium-iron system performs
much stronger under severe heat and
the majority of our ride time is spent
hammering trails leaves a very good
Especially if you’re powering auxiliary lights or audio, the light weight of the Shorai LFX battery
and extra output make it worth the money. Two LFX36L3-BS12s weigh less than the OEM
RSX850i battery but take up more room.
Here’s the LFX36L3-BS12 installed in the John Deere RSX850i, after
the “series bar” has been installed to activate the lithium-iron unit,
and it has an initial charge. We used a Shorai BMS charger with
storage mode ($84.95), but any “smart” lead-acid charger with 13.1
volts and automatic shut-off can be used.
Shorai’s LFX36L3-BS12 is a 36-amp, lithium-iron powersports battery
with an astounding 540 cold cranking amps, yet it’s smaller and
up to 7. 15 pounds lighter than traditional OEM lead-acid batteries
from UTVs. While $329.95 is a lot for a battery, it has a three-year
warranty and outlasts conventional batteries.
