on hard terrain. Six-ply construction
provides improved cornering feel and
resistance to flats compared to the
stock four-ply-rated tires on many UTVs
STI HD6 wheels give machines with
plain wheels a cleaner, meaner look.

WHAT IT IS:
STI’s Outback is well-known as
a versatile, all-terrain tire, and the
Outback XT builds on its credentials
with 1 1/8-inch-deep lugs and a
range of sizes from 26 to 28 inches,
including new, wider 26/10-12, 26/12-
12, 27/10-12 and 27/12-12 sizes for
more flotation on soft, loose terrain.
The Outback XT has six-ply-rated
construction and a rim guard. Pricing
for these tires ranges from $114 to
$169, which is $10 to $20 less than
similar deep-tread, six-ply tires from
other leading brands.
We paired the Outback XTs with
STI’s new HD6 cast-aluminum wheels.
These one-piece wheels are available
in matte black, with milled highlights
and machined/gloss black finishes, and
in 12-, 14- and 17-inch sizes. Prices
start at $92, which is very reasonable
for cast-aluminum wheels. HD6 wheels
feature a lifetime structural warranty.
To test the Outback XT tires and
HD6 wheels, we fitted them to a Polaris
Ranger ETX. The Ranger ETX comes
stock with stamped-steel wheels and
25-inch, four-ply-rated tires, so we
went with 26-inch Outback XTs and
STI OUTBACK XT TIRES AND STI HD6 WHEELS
HD6 wheels to gain some ground
clearance and style.
We immediately liked the rugged
looks of the Outback XT’s deep,
aggressive tread, and we were
surprised to find they rode nearly as
smoothly and quietly as the much
more conservative stock Carlisle 489s.
Traction on hard terrain was very
secure, and the tires gave good, direct
cornering feel with less sidewall flex
than the stock tires.
Soft terrain is where the STI tires
really shined. We climbed loose,
soft hills with very little wheelspin.
The Outback XTs also provide sure
cornering in sand and soft dirt, where
tires with shallower tread push or slide.
STI’s new HD6 wheels fit perfectly
and are a huge style upgrade from
the Ranger’s plain steel wheels. Like
many custom wheels, they require lug
nuts with a 14mm hex. The wheels’
reinforced lip and clear-coated finish
kept them looking like new throughout
STI’s Outback XT tires have the
deep tread and wide sizes needed for
sure-footed traction and extra flotation
in soft terrain, with impressive handling
