WHAT KIND OF SUSPENSION DOES IT
The usual sport quad setup—double
A-arms up front with a solid-axle
swingarm rear end. It’s the shocks that
make the Raptor 700 SE ride better
than most sport machines. The front
and rear piggyback reservoir shocks
have adjustable high- and low-speed
compression damping, adjustable
rebound damping and adjustable spring
preload, and they work well for a wide
range of riders.
HOW DOES THE SUSPENSION WORK ON
For trails and dunes, it’s about as
HOW DOES IT HANDLE?
good as stock suspension gets. The
700 SE is set up firm enough for fast,
aggressive riding, but it’s softer and
more compliant than what you’ll find
on most 450s, which are tuned for
motocross. That means more comfort
at the lower speeds that rocky,
challenging trails and choppy sand call
for. If your riding style or the terrain
require it, you can get more bottoming
resistance by adding more compression
damping, or tune the feel to your liking
with the other adjustments.
The Raptor 700 is a big machine
HOW ARE THE BRAKES?
that feels like something smaller. The
big Raptor is heavier and taller than
typical 450 competition quads, but it
wears its weight well. The Yamaha is
agile in twisty terrain and well-planted
for a machine that’s 45. 5 inches wide.
It slides securely and even feels stable
on side hills. That narrow woods width
comes in handy in tight trail situations.
So does the Raptor’s reverse gear, but
then reverse beats pushing to back
up, no matter how much space you
have. Speaking of space, the Raptor’s
slim midsection and roomy ergonomics
help the rider move freely and stay
comfortable and in control.
Excellent. A machine with the
Raptor’s speed and power would be
scary without great brakes, so Yamaha
put racing-level brake components on
the 700. The front and rear discs aren’t
only powerful, they have such good
feel you always know where the limit
of traction is, whether you’re slowing
from high speeds or easing your way
down a tricky hill. The front brake lever
is adjustable and the flip-lever parking
brake is as convenient at they come.
HOW ARE THE DETAILS?
Well thought out. The Raptor 700
SE is a machine you can enjoy looking
at because of the way it’s built and
finished. The air filter is simple to
service, but it would be cool if the
Raptor had a spin-on oil filter rather
than a cartridge behind an engine
cover. The SE’s GYTR heel guards
and grab bar are sturdy and functional
Broad, easy-to-use power and lots of it make the Raptor 700R SE a
blast when you want to gas it and when you want to cruise.
High- and low-speed
compression damping, rebound
damping and spring preload are
all adjustable on the piggyback
reservoir front shocks.
