Yamaha started the UTV sensation with the Rhino and has reinvented the sport with the five-speed, manual-shift YXZ1000R and the automatic-clutch, paddle-shift YXZ1000R SS. But, Yamaha’s engineering expertise extends far beyond the vehicles we’re most familiar with and includes a surprising variety of other sophisticated products. Here’s a
look at some Yamahas you probably didn’t know existed.
TWO-STROKE 250CC HELICOPTER
Yamaha’s two-stroke, 250cc, radio-controlled helicopter
isn’t for sale to the public, but Yamaha sells “Unmanned
Spray Services,” including a Yamaha pilot using the copter
for special spraying assignments, like delicate vineyards. The
liquid-cooled copter engine is an opposed twin, with top
ends much like a YZ125 motocross bike’s. A 390cc, four-stroke version is also available. Including the rotor, the copter
is 12 feet long.
DIRT-TRACK RACER CONCEPT CAR
Yamaha took the 180-horsepower, four-cylinder, six-speed
R1 sport bike engine and built a dirt-track race car around
it. The chain-drive, rear-wheel-drive car is strictly a concept
vehicle, but it shows Yamaha’s willingness to experiment and
combine street bike and UTV design ideas. Could there be
an R1-powered YXZ1000R in the works?
